ELECTRICAL IMPEDANCE TOMOGRAPHY
Imbalances in regional lung ventilation, with gravity-dependent collapse and over distention of nondependent zones, are likely associated to ventilator-induced lung injury. Electric impedance tomography is a new imaging technique that is potentially capable of monitoring those imbalances. The aim of this study was to validate electrical impedance tomography measurements of ventilation distribution, by comparison with dynamic computerized tomography in a heterogeneous population of critically ill patients under mechanical ventilation. This thesis is concerned with Electrical Impedance Tomography (EIT), a medical imaging technique in which pictures of the electrical conductivity distribution of the body are formed from current and voltage data taken on the body surface. The focus of the thesis is on the mathematical aspects of reconstructing the conductivity image from the measured data. Electrical impedance tomography (EIT) is to reconstruct an impedance distribution in an object of interest from electrical measurement on the boundary of the object. Because of its non-invasiveness, portability and practical utilities, EIT has been actively studied since 1970s and led to many useful and inspiring results. The primary focus of this work is the visualization of multiphase flows (specifically suspensions of neutral buoyant and buoyant particles at low Reynolds number) using EIT. This imaging technique can lead to a better understanding of the nature of these multiphase flows. Therefore, electrical impedance tomography helps in determining the optimal mechanical ventilation in a patient with acute lung injury.
RADIAL BASIS NETWORKS(ARTIFICIAL NEURAL NETWORKS)
RADIAL BASIS NETWORKS is similar to ARTIFICIAL NEURAL NETWORKS,but it differs in number of neurons. They are faster when compared to artificial neural network for a particular application.
Radial basis networks can be designed very quickly in two different ways. The first design method, newrbe, finds an exact solution. The function newrbe creates radial basis networks with as many radial basis neurons as there are input vectors in the training data. The second method, newrb, finds the smallest network that can solve the problem within a given error goal.
Typically, far fewer neurons are required by newrb than are returned newrbe. However, because the number of radial basis neurons is proportional to the size of the input space, and the complexity of the problem, radial basis networks can still be larger than backpropagation networks.
A generalized regression neural network (GRNN) is often used for function approximation. It has been shown that, given a sufficient number of hidden neurons, GRNNs can approximate a continuous function to an arbitrary accuracy.
Probabilistic neural networks (PNN) can be used for classification problems. Their design is straightforward and does not depend on training. A PNN is guaranteed to converge to a Bayesian classifier providing it is given enough training data. These networks generalize well. The GRNN and PNN have many advantages, but they both suffer from one major disadvantage. They are slower to operate because they use more computation than other kinds of networks to do their function approximation or classification.
Superheterodyne Receiver
This paper discusses the basic design concepts of the Superheterodyne receiver in both single and double conversion forms, together with potential problems associated with each architecture.
This tutorial will describe a simple receiver architecture based on the super-heterodyne method of frequency translation.
A simple receiver could consist of an RF amplifier, band-pass filter and some form of demodulator. There is however a problem with this scheme in that the band-pass filter needs to be (1) Very narrow) and (2) tuneable.
We only want a single carrier and so the filter needs to be wide enough to allow the carrier (and it’s associated modulation side-bands) to pass through the filter whilst rejecting everything else. Secondly the narrow filter has to be tuneable over the frequencies of interest.
This is a very difficult requirement especially if the wanted signal is very high frequency.
A possible solution to this problem is to use the super-heterodyne receiver

ZERO-EMISSION NITROGEN PROPULSION SYESTEM
A car powered by liquid nitrogen may be seen cruising the streets. Cylinder injection of a heat transfer fluid followed by liquefied gas has raised efficiency to a point where fuel costs are comparable with petrol, but, more importantly, without the pollution. As well as solving a problem, which has long plagued all Rankine cycle engines, it leads to pollution-free vehicles without the associated cost and weight penalties incurred by batteries.
An automotive propulsion concept is presented which utilizes liquid nitrogen as the working fluid for an open Rankine cycle. Ambient heat exchangers are used to power an engine that is configured to maximize heat transfer during the expansion stroke. If sufficient heat input during the expansion process can be realized then this cryogenic propulsive system would provide greater automotive ranges and lower operating costs than those of electric vehicles currently, being considered for practical use.
Nitrogen gas formed in the heat exchanger expands to about 700 times the volume of its liquid form. This highly pressurized gas is then fed to the expander, where the force of the nitrogen gas is converted into mechanical power by pushing on the engine's pistons. The only exhaust is nitrogen, and since nitrogen is a major part of the atmosphere, the car gives off zero pollution.
An engine propelled by liquid nitrogen is a remarkable step in the development of environment friendly concept cars, which can surely be the next generation technology to be used for mass production.
This paper describes the fundamental concepts of cryogenic automotive propulsion. This includes the thermodynamic theory, which gives the basis of how nitrogen can be used to power engines.

Computer Controlled Mini Vehicle
The aim of this project is to develop a model of a computer controlled vehicle. The vehicle is designed to move in a pre-defined path. This is done by processing the data sent from the vehicle regarding its environment using a program developed using Turbo C. The processed data is then sent back to the vehicle which helps it move in the pre-defined path.
Applications:
1. Military applications.
2. Fire fighting systems.
3. Industrial applications like material transportation from one station to another etc.
The test model is a small vehicle powered by a 6 Volt motor, which is completely computer controlled. The details of the vehicle’s environment is obtained through Micro-Switch sensors attached to the body of the vehicle at different locations. In the test the data collected is sent through a serial cable which in further development can be replaced by wireless receivers. After data processing, suitable commands are sent from the PC to the vehicle which controls it.

Solar Powered Air Conditioner
Summer is the time when you wished you had an Air Conditioner. But, you would rather detest the idea because of the staggering electricity bills you would get once you start using the AC. And it would be a miracle if you could use an AC without paying those hefty electricity bills. In that case, it seems a miracle has just happened!
How about utilizing the free energy of the sun to power up your AC?
The hottest months usually, happens to be also the sunniest. You can use the scorching summer heat to actually remove the heat from your room with the help Photovoltaics (PVs) to power your AC. Photovoltaics are collection of cells which have photovoltaic material that makes use solar radiation to develop direct current electricity. For achieving the best performance the PVs are connected to a solar tracker so as to align themselves towards the sun to receive the maximum amount of solar radiation. The use of a solar tracker would improve the performance of the PVs by whopping 50% in summer.
The use of Concentrated Solar power systems (CSP ) further enhances the utilization of solar power by making use of mirrors to concentrate solar energy onto a photovoltaic cell. Since CSP systems are bigger in construction and expensive they are seldom used to generate power for an air conditioner.
A typical air conditioner consists of the following
1) Condensing coil
2) Expansion valve
3) Evaporator Coil
4) Compressor
Once, the direct current developed by the PVs is fed to the Air Condition unit, you have an Air Conditioner which works on Solar Panels and you can be free from the tension of electricity bills draining your pockets.
Excess power if developed can be used to power other electrical appliance or sold back to a power grid! Ultimately the success of the system would depend upon the cost effectiveness.
Low Energy Wake-up Logic
Wake-up logic is responsible for informing instructions in the Window that are waiting to execute, about the availability of their input operands. The conventional method of wake-up consumes a significant percentage of the Instruction Window energy. Reducing the wake-up energy also addresses the Instruction Window hot spot problem caused due to the high power density of the Instruction Window. In this work, we investigate the energy and power savings of a low complexity scheme that stores the dependence relations between instructions in an array and uses this array to simplify the wake-up. We then present a new wake-up scheme that further reduces the wake-up energy by using a smaller table to store dependence relations and dynamically allocates dependence slots to only those instructions that have dependents in the Window. Our approach leads to savings of up to 50% in wake-up energy and 15% in the Instruction Window power with a very slight decrease in IPC. Also, both the schemes are more scalable than the conventional wake-up scheme with increasing Instruction Window size and Issue Width.

A clock controlled sun tracking system for solar photovoltaic and solar thermal collectors
The commercially available tracking systems make use of servomotors with feedback controllers, and add substantially to the overall cost of a solar energy system. They also require a power supply, and a sophisticated level of maintenance. Since the Solar energy devices are important for applications in decentralized systems, which are usually located in remote and rural areas, these two requirements are often not met. Consequently, tracking is normally dispensed with.
To overcome these limitations, we have developed a clock-controlled mechanism for tracking the Sun. In this mechanism the collector is driven by a counterweight by means of a steel cable whose rate of release is governed by the escape mechanism of a conventional alarm clock. In this system the collectors are mounted in a symmetrical fashion to minimize the effect of wind gusts. A prototype of the system has been fabricated and tested over nearly three years. The system tracks the sun within 0.5 degrees throughout the day.
The design features enable a simple fabrication procedure, and the overall cost of the tracking system is negligible in comparison with the cost of the PV modules. The cost of the system fabricated in our laboratory is less than rupees five hundred only. The cost of the system can be considerably lowered by mass production.

Mains Remote Control Decoder
This receiver/decoder forms part of a simple mains network remote control system, which also includes the ‘Mains Remote Transmitter’ and the ‘Mains Remote Encoder’. The decoder is built around IC1, which is a Holtek type HT12D or HT12F. For the receiver we use the same circuit as in the ‘mains remote switch’, namely a passive circuit tuned to approximately 143 kHz, since we assume that the transmitter is powerful enough to provide an adequate signal. Two 4069U inverters (IC2) are used to convert the received signal to TTL levels. D1 and D2 provide extra protection against noise pulses and the like. The sensitivity can be adjusted using P3, but you should bear in mind that over-driving IC2 can cause corruption of the data.
The trick with IC2 is that a small offset applied to the ?rst buffer causes the second buffer to be displaced from the middle (which can be checked using a multimeter), so that the following monostable multi-vibrator (IC3, a 4538) receives a usable burst as a trigger signal. IC3a is re-triggerable, which means that if a trigger pulse arrives within the set time, the output pulse is extended. However, if the set pulse width is too long, the output pulses are extended so much that the decoder will not recognize them as valid data.
IC3a thus recovers the originally sent code. P2 is added to the circuit to allow the pulse length to be adjusted as accurately as possible, but an oscilloscope is required for this. In practice, the adjustment is not all that critical and P2 can be simply set to its mid-range position. The output of IC3a is fed to the decoder (IC1), which compares the recovered code with the settings of S1 and S2. If the received code matches these settings, output VT goes High and some sort of application can be energized via buffer T2. If you have in mind connecting an active buzzer to the buffer output, you must thoroughly decouple it using a 10-mH coil in series and a 100-µF/16-V electrolytic capacitor in parallel, since these buzzers can be a source of stubborn interference.
The second monostable (IC3b) is used to generate a supplementary pulse with a duration of roughly one second. The pulse length can be modified (by changing R2 and/or C2) to meet the needs of a particular application that requires a certain minimum duration. T1 acts as a simple buffer for this output. As already noted, in principle two different types of decoder can be used: HT12D or HT12F. The HT12D has four data-bit outputs (AD8–AD11), with the data being made available on the SIL header K1. In this case it is better not to fit S2. If an HT12F is used for the decoder, K1 has no function, but a 12bit address can be set.
Naturally, the oscillator of the decoder should be tuned to match the encoder used with the transmitter. For the HT12D/F, the oscillator frequency is 50 times that of the encoder. That means that here the oscillator must be set to around 112 kHz. According to the related curve on the data sheet, this requires an external resistance of approximately 115 k? to be connected between the OSC1 and OSC2 pins. This can be precisely set using P1, and the potentiometer also allows for adjustments to compensate for various tolerances.
The power supply for the circuit is designed according to the usual standard con?guration, with the transformer (Tr2) being intentionally somewhat over-dimensioned to provide extra capacity for powering small applications (buzzer, LED etc.). Building the circuit is a simple task if the illustrated printed circuit board is used. Since the power supply (including the transformer) is fitted on the circuit board, the amount of wiring required is minimal.
